Kudos for Caryn
« on: November 05, 2005, 07:56:19 AM »
This sounds like a neat competition, and I think we should each nominate Caryn for the honor.  Since the criterion are: 25% courage, 25% determination, 25% inspiration and 25% dedication - I think Caryn fits on all criteria.

Special competition: ‘Today Sets Sail’

NBC’s ‘Today’ show and Royal Caribbean International launch an unprecedented search for godmother for Freedom of the Seas

Today show
Updated: 12:52 p.m. ET Nov. 4, 2005

Royal Caribbean International is putting a new twist on a long-standing maritime tradition by launching a national search for the Godmother of Freedom of the Seas — the world’s largest and most innovative cruise ship scheduled to debut in May 2006.

Historically an honor reserved for heads of state, politicians and celebrities, Godmothers officially give ships their names and serve as guiding spirits. Royal Caribbean Godmothers include Her Majesty Queen Sonja of Norway, Rosalynn Carter, Lauren Bacall, Whoopi Goldberg, Gloria Estefan, Katarina Witt, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, champion wheelchair marathoner Jean Driscoll and 2004 Teacher of the Year Kathy Mellor.

Through an unprecedented partnership with NBC “Today,” Royal Caribbean now is seeking to honor all adults by searching for an outstanding  individual — someone who has demonstrated exceptional spirit, courage and integrity — to serve as the Godmother of Freedom of the Seas.
The winner selected to be Freedom of the Seas’ Godmother will preside over the most forward-looking, exciting and innovative ship at sea. Freedom will feature the first-ever surfing simulator at sea, an interactive water park, two cantilevered whirlpools that extend 12 feet out from the sides of the ship and a pool deck with dedicated sports pool that transforms into an open-air nightclub each night. See rules below for complete details.

Each Finalist may be required to submit to a background check.  All Finalists will be required as a condition of continued eligibility to complete and sign an Affidavit of Eligibility, Waiver of Liability, Publicity Release and a Godmother Participation Agreement (“Contest Documents”).  If for any reason any of the Finalists do not meet any of the above eligibility requirements or do not satisfactorily execute all of the Contest Documents, in either TODAY’S or Royal Caribbean’s sole discretion, the Judges may select an alternate Finalist based on the above judging criteria. I agree Rhi...great idea.  The following is a first draft of my submission.  It needs to be completed and fine tuned.  Tell me what you think...

I nominate Caryn Laney McLuan as the "Godmother of the Seas".  She is one of the most spiritual, and giving people I've ever known.  She is a member of US Coast Guard.  She is caring of not only people but of our environment as well.  She is one of the those individuals who is always looking to reach out and lend a hand when there is a need.  When she sees something that needs to be done, she does it, and never expects to be rewarded or even acknowledged.
She not only takes the time to "stop and smell the roses", but she tends them as well. She extends her care to all, many times giving not only of her time, but her support (financially and emotionally) as well.  She has organized fund raisers for people struck by both personal and financial devastation.  She joyfully goes about life and includes many of us in her boundless energy. She guides us spiritually and leads by example.  She does not lecture, pontificate, or make any one’s contribution seem minuscule or of lesser value.
