Green Highrite
« on: February 05, 2008, 11:26:55 AM »
I'm dreaming of a Green Highrite....

OUR GOAL

To have no more than 1 bag of trash at the end of the highrite.

-This is require us to bring potluck items in containers that can be taken back home.
-With as little packaging as possible

No plastic cups, or plates.  If would be great if folks could bring their own plates, cups silverware just like going to a medieval dinner but that might take a while to transition to.

-However- it might be a worthwhile goal to shoot for.  You wash your own dishes and take them home with you.  WooHoo!!!

Any other ideas?

This is something that we should probably do at every high rite.  I'll try to make announcements about it tonight for people planning to be there.

Actually I seem to remember suggesting something like this a couple of years ago and was told it'd more likely lead to big waiting lines at the kitchen sink or something like that.

But I'd go for 'Feastware' at high rites.    I'll bring mine this Saturday.  (Hope I remember it)

Yea, I went down to the 2nd hand store today (my favorite ritual supply place)  and had a look around.  I came away with a heavy glass setting for 2 complete with forest green napkins, placemats and a table cloth for less than $6.  I have an old brief case that I scrubbed down and have hanging upside down to dry.  I think I'll have a nice little feastware set for 2.

I'd rather have wooden plates but I couldn't beat .80 a plate in a rush.  I have been wanting to make one of these up for years.  I know that plastic would be lighter but Will hates plastic and its VERY un-period if you are going for that goal.  ...of couse if I were going for that goal, the whole thing would be pretty un-period but it looks pretty nice for right now.

I am not suggesting that everyone do this, its just kinda cool if you want to.

BTW Z, I would rather have a line into the kitchen than 3-4 people washing all the dishes.  But you know the other kitched is also open, we could set up a washing station in there too.

OH YEAH...The Grove Needs Dish Soap!  I'll try to remember but if anyone else does, you know its not going to go to waste.

If you took all the dishes away people would get the hint really dang fast. Or charged prohibitive amounts of money paid up front for rent..for dishes and silverware.Trillium is doing that this year and soon there will be nothing to rent at all there.  You are never going to get away with one bag if you count the soda recycling....I have several sets some wood, some stainless...some have carrying cases some don't. Most Pagan places it is assumed, CLG is one of those anomalies that doesn't assume you have your own eating rig. So I think it's a beautiful idea. So is field stripping all your dishes and ingredients before you arrive like you would do on a camping trip with no trash facilities. If people bring chips, crackers and cookies there will be boxes and bags and while I discourage that sort of thing...It might happen...But if you bring ten types of fruit in boxes why not combine or take those boxes home or something.  And as the one who hauled away the last bag of plastic bags to be recycled I also encourage you to use canvas totes. Will brought this up a couple of time and was ignored...totally it looks like hehe. These bags are tough as nails and really inexpensive.

I was actually disgusted when CLG was rented last year or the year before and they hid all the real dishes and used throw away stuff because they were too lazy to wash it.  Wasteful!

Oy!  I might have to try and dig out my Feast gear, but I can't even remember where it is right now with all the purging that's going on.

I don't know what anyone else thinks but I think we did pretty good for a start.  When I left there was about 1.5 bags of garbage that ain't bad.  I've seen us throw our 4 or more in a highrite.

I brought a box up today to get all the stuff that had been purged and take it to a 2nd hand store but it appears someone took it with them last night.  We brought home the paper plates, cups and plastic utensils.  I don't know when I can get them up to Ed's but maybe I can catch up with Charlie and he can take them up.  I hear they are talking about a St Paddy's Party.

I think this is a great idea!! I would rather bring my own plate and fork and take it home with me anyway - it just makes sense!

I noticed that the Ostara announement says NO plastic - I have to have a huge plastic bottle of water with me at all times, but I ALWAYS carry it back home with me. Is that acceptable?

Yeah that's fine, we're just trying to avoid things in plastic containers that are just thrown away.  Like.....cinnabuns in plastic trays, etc :)
