Hey, if anyone is interested there are continuing cleanups at the Fort McHenry Watershed.  Here is the link:
http://aqua.org/care/conservation-events

Some of you may remember, this is a bird sanctuary created by throwing soil on top of the Ft. McHenry tunnel (895) and planting grass and eventually trees.

This space is now monitored by a local orinthologist who records which species of migratory birds are resting their each month and reports to the Department of Natural Resources.  This is open to the public on the first Wednesday of every month and is free.  Here is the link:
https://www.nps.gov/fomc/planyourvisit/event-details.htm?event=345FD3FD-155D-4519-3EBD7418ABA2662A

The other opportunity I mentioned during the Ostara Omen/early Beltaine planning session was the Masonville Cove grass planting.  Unfortunately, the only information I found on their website was from 2013.  It is possible that they don't have this posted yet for 2017.  Here is the link for Masonville Cove with contact info:  http://www.masonvillecove.org/pages/community_programs/community_programs.html

And here is the link to Masonville Cove from the Baltimore Aquarium website:  http://aqua.org/care/conservation-initiatives/masonville-cove

April is starting tomorrow, and if anyone has free time, there are two events open, only one of them actually requires pre-registration, the other you can simply show up for. Everything else for April is in the second half of the month. I'm already putting together a list of volunteer opportunities for May, which I will likely be putting up next weekend.

Red Spruce Planting.  Cranesville Swamp Preserve.  Red Spruce (Picea rubens) once covered thousands of acres in western Maryland before logging and wildfires at the turn of the last century drastically reduced its range.
This planting will accelerate restoration of forest cover and regeneration of red spruce.  It will improve habitat quality for rare plants and animals by restoring natural vegetation and ecological processes, and improve hydrology and local climate, reducing erosion and increasing percolation of water into the underlying bedrock. Bring lunch and water, work gloves, sturdy boots, rain gear, and dress in layers, as it may start off cool, but warm up throughout the day. Cranesville Swamp Preserve is 3.5 hours from DC/Baltimore.  RSVP or for more information, contact Deborah Landau at dlandau@tnc.org. http://www.nature.org/ourinitiatives/regions/northamerica/unitedstates/maryland_dc/events/index.htm

Below are the available service opportunities I have found in the area for the month of March. I am not aware of all available opportunities in the area, so please if anyone knows about anything feel free to post here. If anyone wants to go as a group and meet up to carpool for any of these, put that information here as well. If anyone wants me to track the calendars for any other organizations they know about please tell me that as well. It's a slow start, but I definitely plan to make this a monthly fixture, (along with reminder posts on the week of events that are happening.) Hopefully this part of the forum can continue to evolve and become a fixed and active part of the Cedarlight community forum over time.
